About this webinar

In 1957, the first blood gas analyzer was developed and it was capable of measuring pH, pCO2 and pO2. Since then, significant technological advancements have enabled the implementation of low specimen volume test menus that include electrolytes, metabolites and hemoglobin derivations in addition to blood gases and pH. Blood gas analyzers are now routinely used to monitor challenging populations such as critically ill patients.  In this case based webinar, the benefits/limitations of monitoring critically ill patients in the clinical laboratory will be discussed and compared with the merits/limitations of blood gas analyzers.

About the presenter

Dr. Martha Lyon is a Clinical Biochemist who has specialized in Point of Care and Pediatrics since 2000. From 2000 to 2012, Dr. Lyon was the Section Head for Point of Care Testing and Pediatrics with Calgary Laboratory Services at Alberta Children’s Hospital. In 2012, Dr. Lyon moved to Saskatchewan where she accepted a Clinical position in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in Saskatoon Health Region. Dr. Lyon became a Diplomat of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry in 1996 and a Fellow of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry in 2000.
